Signs your consumer unit needs replacing (beyond old fuses)
Spot the signs of an outdated or unsafe fuseboard before a small electrical issue becomes a serious household risk.

Your consumer unit, sometimes called a fuseboard, is the central safety point for your home's electrical circuits. While old rewirable fuses are a clear sign that an upgrade may be due, other problems can be less obvious and may indicate overheating, poor protection or unsafe alterations.
Warning signs your consumer unit needs attention
A consumer unit does not always need replacing simply because it is several years old. However, certain features and symptoms should be assessed by a qualified electrician, particularly if the equipment is damaged, overheating or failing to protect circuits correctly.
There is no RCD protection
Residual current devices, or RCDs, help reduce the risk of serious electric shock by switching off the supply when they detect electricity flowing somewhere it should not. If your fuseboard only contains fuses or standard circuit breakers and has no test buttons marked “T” or “Test”, it may lack modern RCD protection.
Older installations can sometimes be improved with other protective arrangements, but an electrician will need to assess the complete installation before recommending a suitable replacement. RCD protection is particularly valuable for socket circuits and outdoor electrical equipment.
Burning smells, heat or discolouration
A hot plastic smell, buzzing noise, crackling or a warm consumer unit should never be ignored. Brown marks, scorching, melted plastic or discoloured switches can indicate a loose connection, overloaded circuit or component that is overheating.
Switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so, keep clear of any damaged equipment and arrange an urgent electrical assessment. Do not remove the cover of the consumer unit, as live parts may remain accessible inside.
Brittle wiring or exposed gaps
Look only at the outside of the unit and the visible cable entries. Wiring insulation that appears cracked, brittle, frayed or crumbling may be affected by age, heat or previous movement. Gaps around cable entries, missing covers and poorly fitted blanking plates can also leave the enclosure below the standard expected for a safe installation.
These issues are not cosmetic. They can allow dust, debris or accidental contact with electrical parts, so they should be checked by a competent professional rather than sealed or repaired as a DIY job.
Rewirable fuse carriers, often known as wire fuses

Scorch marks, heat, buzzing or burning smells
Missing covers, exposed gaps or damaged switches

Other symptoms that need an electrical check
Frequent or unexplained tripping
A circuit breaker or RCD that trips repeatedly is responding to a fault, overload or leakage somewhere in the installation or connected equipment. Resetting it again and again without finding the cause can increase risk and may hide a developing problem.
Occasional tripping from a faulty appliance may not mean the consumer unit itself needs replacing. However, frequent nuisance tripping, a breaker that will not reset or several circuits going off together calls for professional fault-finding.
Evidence of DIY electrical alterations
Extra cables, mixed cable types, makeshift connections or circuits that are not labelled can suggest that previous work was carried out without suitable inspection or certification. You may also notice an extension added to the consumer unit, spare cables leading nowhere or a mixture of old and new protective devices.
A replacement consumer unit does not automatically make earlier alterations safe. The electrician should inspect the installation, identify any concerns and explain what needs correcting before or alongside the upgrade.
What a replacement usually includes
A professional consumer unit replacement is more than swapping an old box for a newer model. The electrician should first discuss the property's electrical needs and inspect the existing installation so the new equipment is suitable for the circuits it will protect.
Checks commonly include the main earthing and bonding arrangements, the condition of accessible wiring and the operation of each circuit. Circuits should then be clearly identified and labelled, making it easier to isolate the right supply during future maintenance or an emergency.
After installation, the work should be tested and the results recorded. You should receive the relevant electrical certification, along with an explanation of any limitations or recommended follow-up work. Where applicable, electrical work in a dwelling must also be notified under Part P.
A new fuseboard will not fix every fault
Myth: Replacing the consumer unit will solve every electrical problem in the property. In reality, a new fuseboard can provide improved protection, but it cannot repair damaged cables, faulty appliances, poor connections or an underlying insulation fault.
Fault-finding may be needed first if circuits are tripping, test results are unsatisfactory or the existing wiring shows signs of damage. A responsible electrician will explain these findings and provide clear options instead of treating replacement as a cure-all.
